A paper mill in the US was experiencing bearing failures on its nip roll after just 12 months of service, leading to continuous paper roll failures. In total, downtime and maintenance costs were amounting to 600,000€ per annum.
With downtime at the busy paper mill costed at 20,000€ per hour, it was imperative to find a comprehensive solution.
Machine and bearing failure analysis identified that the existing OE bearing design was not appropriate for the application. The design issues were leading directly to the failures.
Modifications to clearance, interference fits and adjustments to the use of the turnbuckle were all implemented. NSK Spherical Bearings with the recommended changes were installed, eliminating subsequent failures and costs.
